How to: Set up a Coupon experience

This article explains how to create an experience that either includes a Coupon as part of the user journey or distribute a coupon as its sole aim.

We have two ways to approach using Coupons or Coupon Codes through an experience, either a standalone Coupon experience or by adding coupons to another campaign types.

Standalone Coupon Experience

These are all included in the Promotions section of the Experience Library. We have 3 types:

  • Coupon Code
    Users can claim a coupon and are presented with either a fixed coupon code or a unique coupon code generated according to a defined format.
  • Limited Coupon Code
    Users a given a unique coupon code taken from a supplied list of codes, provided by the client. This list is finite.
  • Print Coupon
    Users are presented with a coupon image, normally containing full details of the offer and valid barcode, that can be printed. The user can then use the coupon in-store. You will need a coupon image to load into the experience.

What to do

Most of the steps for creating these 5 types are the same (with some additions - see individual sections below)

  1. Navigate to the Experience Library, under Promotions tab select one of the following experiences:
    • Coupon Code
      Here you can enter your Coupon Code. You have two options:
      • Fixed Coupon Code: Enter the text / numbers you want this code to be: E.g. Coupon123. All coupons for this experience will be the same
      • Random Coupon Generation: To add randomly-assigned values, use $ for a random character of the alphabet (letter); @ for a random alphanumeric character (letter or number); or # for a random number. you can use any number of these and in combination with fixed values e.g. my-code-$$$$-#### may give a result my-code-bksf-3882.
    • Limited Coupon Code
      Upload a text file containing one coupon code per line. We’ll distribute the codes to users, and once all codes have been used, we’ll warn further users that there are no codes left.
      When you export the participant data for the experience, you’ll be able to see which user was given each code.
    • Offers
      Display a list of teasers for deals or product offers. Offers can be displayed as inline simple teasers, or rich overlays with page-like capabilities per teaser. Call to actions can take users to your product pages or your eCommerce store. Offers can be scheduled to automatically publish and expire.
    • Print Coupon
      You'll need to upload a coupon image that will be displayed to users who participate in the experience. they can then print this coupon and use it as instructed within the coupon itself or the rules of the campaign.
    • Promotion
      Display a list of teasers to other campaigns, products or external pages on your website. Promotions can be displayed as inline simple teasers, or rich overlays with page-like capabilities per teaser. Call to actions can take users to your product pages or other EngageSciences campaigns. Promotions can be scheduled to automatically publish and expire.
  2. Give your experience a Name.
  3. Once you have selected the type of Coupon experience you wish to run you can go ahead and build it as you would a standard experience:
    • The only difference that you need to be aware of is that you need to set up the criteria and design around the coupon.
    • Also it is worth considering that on the Entry page you can also set an upper limit to the number of entrants who can redeem a coupon:

Setting up Coupons

  1. Open the Rewards section, then click on "Edit" reward on the right-hand side
  2.  You now have 2 areas to update: Settings & Content
    • To update the Content you want to consider what description or instructions you need to give a user around the coupon.
    • It will pre-select the Coupon Type depending on what you have previously chosen.
    • If you are not using a Print Coupon then you will want to consider adding two design assets: The Main Asset and the Thumbnail Asset. If you are using a Print Coupon you want to just include a Thumbnail image.
    • Finally, you will want to configure the settings to outline when a coupon is Valid From and Valid Until. You can also include redemption instructions at this stage: E.g. Go to checkout on and enter this code to receive the discount

Configuring the Confirmation Page

This is the page that you will include your coupon on. Once a user has entered their details they will then land on the Confirmation Page. You can use standard page components on this page as normal but the important component to include is the Rewards Component.

This will include the Coupon you have set up in your earlier steps - on this Confirmation page for the user to access.

Reporting on Coupons

As well as standard Insights on campaigns, you can also review these 3 areas:

  • Export data
    This includes all the first-party data together with any unique identifiers on the coupon.
  • Entries
    Allows you to review each entrant individually
  • Redemptions
    Provides a detailed breakdown of who has redeemed (i.e. collected) a coupon as well as how many are left (if you have set a limit).
